The Redirection Manager in All in One SEO makes it easy to add redirects to your site.

Common Redirect Types

The most frequently asked question we get about redirects is which type to use.

For most users, the two most common types of redirect will be all you need to use. These are:

  • 301 Moved Permanently: Use this if you want to permanently redirect the old URL because the content has been deleted or moved.
  • 307 Temporary Redirect: Use this if you only want to temporarily redirect the old URL

Advanced Redirect Types

For advanced users, there are other types of redirect you may need. These are:

  • 302 Found: This is rarely used and usually as a temporary redirect. It means that the content has been found but at a different URL. It’s better to use either the 301 Moved Permanently or 307 Temporary Redirect instead
  • 303 See Other: This is a special type of redirect used for some kinds of files in certain programming languages
  • 304 Not Modified: This is another special type of redirect that lets browsers know the resource hasn’t been modified since the version specified in the request headers
  • 308 Permanent Redirect: This is rarely used and means that the resource has moved permanently. It’s best to use a 301 Moved Permanently instead
  • Pass through: This option will keep the current URL and load the content of the target URL. External URLs may be used.

Client Error Responses

You may also create Client Error Responses for your URLs:

  • 400 Bad Request: The server could not understand the request.
  • 401 Unauthorized: Means the client must authenticate itself to get the requested response.
  • 403 Forbidden: The client does not have access rights to the content.
  • 404 Not Found: The server can not find the requested resource.
  • 410 Gone: The requested content has been permanently deleted from server, with no forwarding address.
  • 418 I’m a teapot: The server refuses the attempt to brew coffee with a teapot. This error is a reference to Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol defined in April Fools’ jokes in 1998 and 2014. Some websites use this response for requests they do not wish to handle, such as automated queries.
  • 451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons: The user-agent requested a resource that cannot legally be provided, such as a web page censored by a government.

Server Error Responses

You may also create Server Error Responses for your URLs:

  • 500 Internal Server Error: The server has encountered a situation it doesn’t know how to handle.
  • 501 Not Implemented: The request method is not supported by the server and cannot be handled. The only methods that servers are required to support (and therefore that must not return this code) are GET and HEAD.
  • 502 Bad Gateway: This error response means that the server, while working as a gateway to get a response needed to handle the request, got an invalid response.
  • 503 Service Unavailable: The server is not ready to handle the request. Common causes are a server that is down for maintenance or that is overloaded.
  • 504 Gateway Timeout: This error response is given when the server is acting as a gateway and cannot get a response in time.
  • 505 HTTP Version Not Supported: The HTTP version used in the request is not supported by the server.

Setting the Default Redirect Type

You can set the default Redirect Type by going to Redirects in the All in One SEO menu and clicking on the Settings tab.

Scroll down to the Redirect Defaults section and you’ll see the drop-down for Redirect Type. What you set here will be used as the default for all redirects unless you set something different in each individual redirect.

Did you know that you can create redirects in All in One SEO Pro that will ignore whether there’s a trailing slash at the end of the URL?

This is especially useful in catching visitors that may go to your site but leave off the trailing slash.

For example, a visitor may type in https://mydomain.com/blog/ to reach your blog. This URL has the trailing slash at the end of the URL.

However, visitors may also type in https://mydomain.com/blog to reach your blog. This URL doesn’t have a trailing slash at the end of the URL.

When you create a redirect, you have the option to redirect the URL without the trailing slash, or the URL with the trailing slash, or both.

Ignore Trailing Slash for a Single Redirect

Here’s how to ignore the trailing slash in a single redirect:

To get started, go to Redirects in the All in One SEO menu.

You’ll see the Redirects screen and at the top will be the Add New Redirection form.

Now click the settings icon on the right side of the Source URL field.

You’ll see three checkboxes, one is for Ignore Slash. Check this box and the trailing slash will be ignored for this redirect only.

Did you know that you can create redirects in All in One SEO Pro that will ignore whether there are uppercase or lowercase letters in URLs?

This is especially useful in catching visitors that may go to your site but use uppercase instead of lowercase when they type your URL.

For example, a visitor may type in https://mydomain.com/blog/ to reach your blog. This URL is all lowercase which is normal.

However, visitors may also type in https://mydomain.com/Blog to reach your blog. This URL has a capital B for Blog in the URL.

When you create a redirect, you have the option to redirect the URL regardless of what case is used in the URL.

When you delete a post or page from your site, All in One SEO will prompt you to add a redirect.

This helps so that visitors don’t try visiting a post or page that’s been deleted and get a 404 Not Found error.

You can also have All in One SEO automatically redirect visitors when content is deleted. You can learn about the Automatic Redirects feature here.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to manually add a redirect when you delete content.

When you trash any content in your WordPress Admin area, All in One SEO will display a notice at the top of the screen shown below:

Add Redirect notice displayed by All in One SEO when content is deleted

To add a redirect for the deleted content, click the Add Redirect to improve SEO link.

You’ll see the Add a Redirect popup shown below:

Add a Redirect popup in All in One SEO

You’ll see that the Source URL is already filled out with the URL of the content you deleted.

In the Target URL field, enter the URL you want to redirect to. The URL can be either a relative URL or an absolute URL.

The default is the homepage of your site which is represented as a slash ( / ).

Target URL field in the Add a Redirect popup

In the Redirect Type drop down, select the type of redirect you want. The two most common are:

  • 301 Moved Permanently: Use this if you want to permanently redirect the old URL because the content has been permanently deleted.
  • 307 Temporary Redirect: Use this if you only want to temporarily redirect the old URL.
  • 410 Gone Redirect: Use this if you believe the content will never come back and it’s permanently deleted. Google will slowly remove the URL from search engine result pages. It’s important to note that Google may consider 410 URLs as “Soft 404”. They might also appear in your Google Search Console’s Index Coverage Report, and that’s perfectly normal. But you don’t have to worry about them. They will be removed from the Google Search Console automatically after a certain period of time.

Click the Add Redirect button to add your redirect.

A pass through redirect is one that loads the content of the page you’re redirecting to but keeps the old URL.

For example, you want to redirect from https://mysite.com/source-url/ to https://mysite.com/target-url/ but hide this fact to the visitor by keeping the URL https://mysite.com/source-url/.

All in One SEO makes it easy to export redirects in a number of formats. You can also import redirects if you want to copy or migrate them to another site. You can also export logs as well.

Tutorial Video

To get started, go to Redirects in the All in One SEO menu and then click on the Import / Export tab.

Import / Export Redirects screen in All in One SEO

Exporting Redirects

On the Import / Export screen you’ll see a section for Export Redirects. Here you have several choices.

You’ll see check boxes for Export All Redirects or to just export the specific types of redirects. Here’s an explanation of each check box:

  • Export All Redirects: This will export all the redirects set in All in One SEO
  • Manual Redirects: This will export only the redirects you’ve created on the Redirects tab
  • Modified Posts: This will export only the redirects that All in One SEO has automatically created when slugs have been modified in your content. The Automatic Redirects setting must be enabled for this
  • 404 Redirects: This will export only the redirects you’ve created from 404 Logs. The 404 Logs setting must be enabled for this

Once you’ve selected which redirects you want to export, you can select the format for the export file in the drop down.

There are three types of export files that All in One SEO can generate:

  • Complete Data (JSON): This file is used when you want to import your redirects on another site
  • Apache Redirects (.htaccess): This will generate a file you can use to migrate your redirects to your .htaccess file on your server
  • NGINX Redirects (.nginx): This will generate a file you can use to migrate your redirects to your nginx.conf file on your server

Once you’ve selected which redirects you want to export, and the format for the export file, click the Export Redirects button and the file will download to your computer.

Importing Redirects

You can import redirects into All in One SEO using our JSON file format of using CSV. This can be useful when you want to copy redirects to another site or to import redirects created in a spreadsheet.

Importing Redirects from a JSON File

To start, make sure you’ve exported your redirects from All in One SEO using the Complete Data (JSON) file format.

Then, in the Import Redirects from AIOSEO File section, click the Choose a File button and locate and select the export file you downloaded to your computer. Finally, click the Import button to import your redirects.

Importing Redirects from a CSV File

To start, create your CSV file with the redirects you want to import. There’s a sample CSV file that you can download by clicking on the click here link in the Import Redirects from a JSON or CSV File section.
